The San Jose Earthquakes are looking to combine another offensive explosion with a better defensive effort after a devastating 4-3 loss to LAFC at home Saturday night.

They welcome to Avaya Stadium a New England Revolution team that needed late drama of their own to rally and tie the Chicago Fire, 1-1, at Toyota Park on Saturday.

Will there be more fireworks on Wednesday? History says no, with the last two meetings between these two clubs ending in goalless draws.

The Revolution are unbeaten in their last five MLS games against the Earthquakes (3W-2D). They had won three of their previous 21 games against San Jose (14L-4D), per Opta.

Trailing 2-1 at halftime after Vako put the hosts in front after 11 minutes, two goals by Chris Wondolowski 11 minutes apart gave San Jose (2-9-3) a 3-2 lead and it appeared the Earthquakes would leave Avaya Stadium with three points for the first time since opening the season with a wild 3-2 win over Minnesota United FC.

But then, Adama Diomande leveled with his second goal of the game in the 90th minute and Joao Moutinho netted the winner in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time to silence the suffering 'Quakes supporters.

“This was absolutely the hardest defeat so far in my MLS career,” head coach Mikael Stahre said. “With just one minute left in the 90 minutes, were up 3-2 and two minutes later we’re losing the game. For me that is absolutely crazy, but I’m proud of the players’ commitment and energy. We followed the game plan, especially in the second half.”

New England Revolution

New England (6-4-5) stretched their unbeaten run to four games with their third draw during that spell, rallying to tie Chicago on Saturday.

The hero again was Teal Bunbury, who extended his goal-scoring streak to four consecutive games with his ninth goal of the season after Diego Fagundez pressured goalkeeper Richard Sanchez to cough up the ball near the end line.

“I thought we had a lot of domination in the second half,” Brad Friedel said. “I thought we created a lot of opportunities in the second half  a lot of good opportunities. I thought we were a little bit unlucky that we didnt score two or three in that second half.

“So Im a little bit disappointed that we didn’t come away with all three points, but the boys showed a lot of character to claw back to 1-1.”
