@King__T: POSITIONING, DISCIPLINE and DESIRE:- 

Do not drift away from your position. Just like every other player on the field, stay in your position, cover your area and fulfill your responsibilities. If you begin covering your player and another player you are sure to make a mistake. Or if you begin trying to do too much, you are sure to break down. Stay in your position and assure everyone else is in their position. If you begin to drift from your position, you begin to lose that solidarity on defense. Now, no one has a reference point for the last line and the system will be exposed. If you try to do too much or too little, you are not doing anyone a favor.

So remember, be the army general, be the eyes and ears of your entire team. Make sure no one is behind you – not the opponent and especially not your teammates. Always keep close proximity to your midfielders as this will help you on the defensive and offensive end. Control the speed of the game; create a flow your team is comfortable with. If necessary, speed the game up, or slow it down. Finally, hold true to your responsibilities – do not allow yourself to lose the structure of your defense and your team. 

@raheem_CFC: To be a good defender you definitely need composure, to be able to be composed and focused in difficult situations and not crack under pressure. You need to be able to read a game well, can't be a defender and don't have a clue of what's going on in a game or how to track a forward. You also need to know how to man mark, or zone a player when necessary, how to make space and how to close down space. A good defender needs to know how to tackle and to time his tackles to perfection 99 out of a 100 times. You need pace, strength and a competent mindset. You also need team spirit and a drive to talk to players and dictate the game, give instructions and control a game. You also need the qualities of scoring goals when it matters even to you a defender. Defenders are usually good headers of the ball and are strong options for set play free kicks and corners. You need to be able to drag your team out if difficult situations when the team is under pressure from an attacking team. You need to know how to be calm and set up your back line perfectly. A final attribute is also a good player of the ball, good control and can be able to play out from the back as well, long balls don't always work unless it's necessary based on tactics.. a few defenders who fit my descriptions are SERGIO RAMOS, PIQUE, PUYOL, BONUCCI, CHIELLINI, CHRISTENSEN. Defenders need all these qualities in my opinion
