AFCON 2025: Senegal coach Thiaw speaks after historic title

Under heavy criticism after the incident in the 2025 AFCON final, Senegal coach Pape Thiaw broke his silence in a lengthy message posted on Instagram.

He spoke in particular about his pride in winning the AFCON and the incident that occurred during the final.

For Senegal“My heart, soul and spirit are rooted in this beautiful country that has given me everything, and for it I would do the impossible. We experienced an exceptional tournament with magnificent organization, even if it ended in dramatic circumstances.

It was never my intention to go against the principles of the game I love. I only wanted to protect my players from what I felt was an injustice. What some see as a breach of the rules was simply an emotional reaction to an unfair situation. After discussion, we chose to continue and fight to win this trophy for you.

I apologize if anyone was offended, but football lovers know emotion is part of the game. I thank our President, the Minister of Sports, the Federation and our incredible fans for their support. I also thank my family for giving me strength every day.

And finally, my players , 28 warriors who gave everything for their nation. Beyond being champions, you are exceptional men, and it is an honor to lead you.”

Facing possible sanctions from CAF, the coach is currently savoring the second star added to the Lions of Teranga’s trophy cabinet.
