Thiaw emphasizes brotherhood and squad depth ahead of derby

Senegal coach Pape Thiaw has spoken openly about the significance of the upcoming quarter-final clash against Mali, highlighting both the rivalry and the deep connections between the two nations. 

“These are two brother countries. Personally, I am half Senegalese and Malian. A derby is meant to be won,” Thiaw said. “It’s up to us to put all the ingredients in place to go get the qualification and go all the way.”

The coach also addressed questions about his squad selection, defending his decision to work with a large pool of players. “When I say that I have 28 starters, it bothers some people, but I repeat it. Competition is healthy, especially in attack,” Thiaw explained. “I have several profiles, each with their qualities. There are no substitutes in this group, and it’s a privilege to have such a squad.”
