Algerian striker Mohamed Amoura has apologized after his controversial gesture while celebrating his team’s win against DR Congo at AFCON 2025, which many fans saw as disrespectful. He says he didn’t know the full meaning behind the gesture and regrets the misunderstanding.

During Algeria’s tense Round of 16 win over the Democratic Republic of Congo at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, forward Mohamed Amine Amoura sparked backlash with a gesture made toward Congolese fans.
After Algeria scored the winning goal, Amoura celebrated by mimicking a stiff, upright pose, a move many interpreted as mocking Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, a well-known DR Congo superfan nicknamed “Lumumba Vea.”
“I was very emotional and didn’t know the significance of the person in the stands. I apologize to Congolese fans,” he wrote.
He also added that his actions were not meant to offend anyone and that he respects all fans and cultures.
“I respect Congo and their team. Honestly, I wish them the best and hope they qualify for the World Cup,If my behavior was misunderstood, I sincerely regret it, as it was never my intention.”
The incident quickly spread across social media, with many calling the gesture inappropriate. Critics said it disrespected not just a fan, but a symbol of Congolese pride.
Others defended Amoura, saying the gesture was misunderstood and not meant to mock anyone.
