Olivier Verdon has identified unity and discipline as the Cheetahs’ biggest weapons as they head into their knockout showdown, even as challenging weather conditions have affected the tournament.

“The spirit will be collective,” Verdon said firmly. “We may not have the strongest squad on paper, but our cohesion, combativeness and solidarity make us competitive.”

The defender admitted that heavy rainfall has slightly dampened the spectacle at this year’s AFCON. “The only disappointing thing has been the weather. It rains a lot,” he said. “For footballers, the conditions are still playable, but for the fans and the quality of the show, better weather would be preferable.”

Despite this, Verdon insists the team has adapted well since arriving early in Morocco. Three weeks of intensive preparation have helped the players build chemistry and confidence, culminating in their first AFCON victory.

“That win is a source of pride, but it’s not the final goal,” he emphasized. “If we are focused, serious and faithful to our game plan, we have a very good chance of qualifying. That’s why we’re here.”

With the captain’s armband on his arm, Verdon is ready to lead by example as the Cheetahs chase a place in the next round.
