Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has delivered a firm reminder to his players ahead of their next encounter against Tanzania, insisting that humility must remain at the core of the Atlas Lions’ approach despite widespread talk of favouritism. With expectations rising around his side, Regragui was quick to play down the narrative, stressing that reputations alone do not win matches on the African stage.

“Everybody is saying we’re the favourites, but our players will remain humble,” Regragui stated. He pointed to history as a cautionary tale, noting that Morocco’s long wait for a second Africa Cup of Nations title has often been undermined by overconfidence. “The reason we haven’t won the AFCON for over 50 years is overconfidence. We didn’t win because we lacked humility at certain moments,” he admitted.

The Moroccan coach also underlined his respect for Tanzania, highlighting their steady development and growing domestic strength. Regragui referenced the influence of Simba SC and Young Africans (Yanga), two clubs that have raised the country’s footballing profile on the continent. “We will respect Tanzania, who qualified and are developing in football,” he said, making it clear that Morocco expect a competitive challenge rather than an easy outing.
