AFCON 2025: Senegal become first quarterfinalists

In the round of 16 match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations between Senegal and Sudan, the Lions of Teranga secured their place in the quarterfinals with a 3-1 victory.

Despite a difficult start to the match, with Sudan taking the lead in the 6th minute thanks to Amiir Abdallah, Senegal showed remarkable composure.

Led by an imperial Pape Gueye, the Lions gradually took control of the game. The midfielder first equalized in the 29th minute before scoring a decisive second goal in added time in the first half with a clear left-footed strike.

The second half confirmed the technical and physical superiority of Pape Thiaw’s men. Camped in the opposition’s half, the Senegalese managed their lead while remaining threatening.

The coach’s tactics paid off: Ibrahim Diagne, who came on to boost the attack, scored the second goal in the 77th minute.

This first goal for the young prospect capped off a solid 3-1 team performance.

With their commanding victory in Tangier, Senegal became the first nation to officially secure their place in the quarterfinals of the 2025 edition.

This sends a strong signal to the competition for the 2021 African champions.

The Lions now await the identity of their next opponent, who will emerge from the highly anticipated duel between Mali and Tunisia.
