AFCON 2025:Chelle Weighs Tactical Flexibility vs Tunisia In Group C Showdown

Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has stressed respect for Tunisia’s quality but maintained confidence in his Super Eagles squad ahead of their highly anticipated Group C clash at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday.

The fixture, scheduled for the Complexe Sportif de Fès, pits two traditional African heavyweights against each other in what many consider an early litmus test in the tournament.

Speaking at his pre-match press briefing, Chelle highlighted Tunisia’s tactical maturity and strong recent form, particularly in World Cup qualifying, but insisted Nigeria are focused on growth, identity, and seizing the opportunity to evolve.

“Tunisia are a big team with a strong playing identity and a solid World Cup qualifying campaign behind them,” Chelle said.

“They play good football and started this tournament very well. But we have a good team too, and we are improving with every match.”

Tunisia enter the match on the back of an impressive run that includes disciplined performances and a well-structured system, elements Chelle acknowledged will demand smart decision-making from his side.

However, the Franco-Ivorian tactician also hinted at tactical flexibility, suggesting Nigeria could adapt depending on how the game unfolds — a departure from rigid dogma and a sign of growing confidence in the team’s game management.

“In my mind, we may either let Tunisia have the ball and play directly when we recover it, or continue with our philosophy,” he explained.

“There is no pressure on us — this tournament is an opportunity to correct what went wrong before and continue building our identity.”

The statement reflects a pragmatic mindset from Chelle, who has been working to blend structure with spontaneity in Nigeria’s play, leaning on the squad’s athleticism, transitional speed, and hunger for redemption after past disappointments.

The Super Eagles will also draw inspiration from defenders like Calvin Bassey, who has been vocal about the team’s belief, and the attacking firepower of Victor Osimhen — now at Galatasaray — whose physical presence and direct threat could prove decisive if Nigeria opt for a transition-heavy approach.

Despite Tunisia’s 1-0 victory over Nigeria in their most recent meeting at the AFCON 2021 Round of 16, Chelle was keen to frame AFCON 2025 as a forward-looking project, not a stage for fear or fixation on history.

Nigeria currently sit well in Group C and view this game as both a competitive challenge and a continuation of their rebuilding arc.

With Morocco hosting the tournament and Fès expected to be electrified by travelling Nigerian fans, the Super Eagles are aware of the scale of the contest — but also the opportunity it presents.

The match promises a tactical chess battle: Tunisia seeking control through possession and structure, Nigeria prepared to either absorb and strike or impose their evolving philosophy with confidence and courage.

One thing Chelle made clear — Nigeria will play without pressure, but not without ambition.
