Mali targets FIFA after frustrating draw with Zambia

Mali opened their AFCON 2025 campaign with growing frustration after a 1-1 draw against Zambia, a result that left head coach Tom Saintfiet visibly upset.

The Eagles dominated long stretches of the match and took the lead through Lamine Sinayoko, but a late equalizer from Patson Daka deep into stoppage time denied them a crucial victory.

Despite missed chances, including a saved penalty from El Bilal Touré, Saintfiet admitted his side failed to kill the game when they had control.

Beyond the sporting disappointment, the Mali coach openly criticized FIFA for decisions he believes have directly weakened his squad. Saintfiet pointed to the international calendar that allowed clubs to retain players until December 15, just days before the tournament began. As a result, Sikou Niakaté and Hamari Traoré suffered injuries with their clubs and now miss key AFCON fixtures. Saintfiet described the situation as unacceptable, arguing that major tournaments should better protect national teams and their players.

The draw already complicates Mali’s path to qualification, and pressure will intensify ahead of a decisive clash against Morocco on Friday. Aware of the stakes, Saintfiet acknowledged that his team has little margin for error, especially with several key players sidelined. Mali must now regroup quickly, knowing that any further slip could severely damage their hopes of progressing in the competition.
