Taifas Stars of Tanzania head coach Manuel Gomandi has declared his side fully prepared for the daunting task of facing Nigeria’s Super Eagles in their Group C opener at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday.

The clash will mark the first AFCON meeting between Tanzania and Nigeria since 1980, when the Super Eagles, inspired by the late Christian Chukwu, claimed a 3–1 victory on home soil and went on to lift their first continental title.
Forty-five years on, Gomandi believes his players are embracing the occasion rather than fearing Nigeria’s pedigree.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Monday, the Argentine tactician expressed confidence in his team’s readiness while acknowledging the scale of the challenge ahead.
“We are very well prepared, we are excited to be part of this AFCON and we are more than ready for tomorrow’s game,” Gomandi said.
“We have a very difficult game but it’s a nice challenge for us.”
Nigeria arrive at the tournament with one of the most feared attacks on the continent, spearheaded by Victor Osimhen, now plying his trade with Galatasaray, alongside a cast of Europe-based stars. Gomandi admitted that neutralising such quality will require near-perfection from his players.
“We need to be very careful, work in a perfect situation and I’m sure my players will put in extra effort to contain the threat from Nigeria,” he explained.
The Tanzania coach stressed the importance of realism and discipline against a side capable of punishing the slightest lapse in concentration.
“We need to be realistic. When you see the qualities in the Nigeria team you need to put in more than 100 percent effort to try to neutralize them,” he added.
“But our mentality is to try to play and attack as well.
“We need to be tactically disciplined and there should not be any room for mistakes, because if you don’t avoid such mistakes, the qualities in the Nigerian team can punish you.”
For Tanzania, the encounter represents an opportunity to test their growth on Africa’s biggest stage, while Nigeria will be keen to start their campaign strongly as they target another deep run at AFCON 2025.
As history, ambition, and contrasting styles collide, Tuesday’s Group C opener promises a compelling start for both sides.
