Football expert Lucy Zelic has revealed Sam Kerr's biggest mistake following her three-word alleged racist slur aimed at a UK policeman in January last year.
Speaking on ABC Radio, Zelic - an Australian TV presenter - stated the Matildas captain was wrong to avoid telling Football Australia and the national side about what allegedly unfolded following a boozy night out in London on Juanuary 30 last year.
It is understood Kerr - a multi-million dollar athlete and arguably Australia's leading sportswoman - got into an argument with the officer surrounding a taxi fare.
'As a national team player [and captain] she has an obligation to inform Football Australia of such incidents,' Zelic told the ABC.
'She should have reported it.'
However, Zelic dismissed talk that Kerr, 30, should be stripped of the Matildas captaincy.
'There are a few important factors to consider ... Sam has pleaded not guilty and needs to be afforded due process,' she said.
'What concerns me most is Sam has been labelled a racist by some people on her own Instagram page ... her mental health is vital, she has endured more than most.'
Zelic was referring to Kerr's World Cup on home soil being hampered due to injury and then tearing her ACL at a Chelsea training camp in Morocco recently.
As a result, Kerr will be sidelined for at least nine months and will miss the Paris Olympics in July.
It comes as the Chelsea striker - who has scored 99 career goals for the Blues - appeared in court earlier this week accused of using insulting, threatening or abusive words that caused alarm or distress to the officer in Twickenham, southwest London.
Kerr's lawyers will attempt to have the charges thrown out when the matter returns to court next month.
If that is unsuccessful, a four-day trial will follow beginning on February 2, 2025.
The goal machine is alleged to have called the officer a 'stupid white PC' - a claim Kerr denies.
Hours before the alleged incident, Kerr was on cloud nine after scoring a hat-trick for Chelsea against Liverpool in the FA Cup, with the Blues winning 3-2.
