The 25-year-old midfielder had already won the Ballon d’Or Feminin, the Women’s World Cup Golden Ball, the UEFA Player of the Year and Champions League Player of the Season in recent months.

She was the favourite pick ahead of national team-mate Jenni Hermoso and Colombian star Linda Caicedo who were also on the shortlist.

The trio were amongst the top performing players at last year's Women's World Cup that took place across both Australia and New Zealand, with Spain beating England in the final.

Bonmati starred for Spain by scoring two goals on their way toWorld Cup success last year, while also helping Barcelona secure the women's Treble of league, Spanish Cup and Champions League.

The superstar who has enjoyed a stellar campaign with both club and country in the past year used her winners speech to congratulate the upcoming generation of female footballers.

Each nominee boasted strong credentials for the individual accolade that was presented at an awards ceremony in London on Monday evening that saw the world's top footballing talents come under one roof.

Hermoso was Bonmati's closest competitor in the three-player shortlist after being voted for the crown following a stellar 12 months.

The 33-year-old also played an influential role in guiding Spain to the Women's World Cup and was also involved in one of the biggest stories following the tournament after she was inappropriately kissed by former Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales.

Hermoso was kissed on the lips by Rubiales, who, following a long period of refusal eventually resigned from his role as FA president over the kiss that took place on the World Cup trophy podium after the final.

Real Madrid's Caicedo was the third competing player for the individual accolade as featured on the shortlist following an impressive season.

Caicedo was one of the best player's at last year's Women's World Cup during which she starred against England and finished the tournament with two goals.
