Sam Kerr shares photo from her hospital after operation as Lingard sends support

Matildas captain Sam Kerr took to social media to share her recovery update after undergoing surgery to repair her anterior cruciate ligament, as sports stars send their support.

The striker, 30, had her operation on Thursday following her devastating knee injury that she suffered while on a training break in Morocco with Chelsea.

In her post to Instagram, the Aussie star is pictured in a hospital bed, with a bandage on one leg, posing with her thumb up and a smile.

'On the road to recovery. Netflix recommendations below plz x,' she wrote alongside the photo.

Among the sports stars to leave messages of support were cricket great David Warner and ex-Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard.

'Hope recovery goes well,' Warner said.

'Back stronger,' wrote Lingard.

Netflix Australia also responded to the post, writing: 'Tell us the last thing you watched and we'll give you some reccos.'

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes explained explained last week that the injury was caused by a 'simple and innocuous' everyday movement on the training field.

But Hayes, who said she was 'gutted' for her goal poacher, wouldn't pontificate about the future of Kerr at the club.

There has been much speculation, some suggesting that Kerr may have played her last game for the English champions and others saying she was planning to renew her contract with the Blues, which is up at the end of the season.

'She's had surgery. Gutted for her, gutted for the team,' Hayes, who is herself leaving at the end of the season to take the reins of the US women's national team, told Sky Sports.

'These injuries happen in football, Sam knows that. I think the important thing is we are here to support her.

'The recovery, the rehab begins now. Today is about letting her know she's with her Chelsea family and we'll look after her.'

Hayes revealed how the injury had happened during Chelsea's warm-weather training in Morocco.

'Doing a football action she does every day - turning and shooting. Something very simple and innocuous,' she shrugged.
