United States women's national team midfielder Kristie Mewis will sign for West Ham United and leave the National Women's Soccer League, according to a report.
Mewis was part of the NWSL-Champion Gotham FC for two years, but appears to be heading to England to play her club football, per The Athletic.
A move to the Women's Super League, the female equivalent to the Premier League, would put Mewis in direct competition with fiancé Sam Kerr.
Kerr, the top-choice striker for the Australian women's national team, also starts for current WSL champions Chelsea.
Mewis has played abroad once before, spending the 2015-16 season on loan with Bayern Munich. This would be Mewis' first permanent move to a foreign club.
Mewis only played in one game of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, coming on as a substitute late into the USWNT's Round of 16 match against Sweden.
Former American coach Vlatko Andonovski also opted for Mewis to take a penalty in the win-or-be-eliminated shootout, which she converted. Sweden would end up eliminating the United States a few minutes later.
West Ham are currently tied for last in the WSL with Bristol City, with only the team that finishes last in the league being relegated every season. Chelsea are currently in first place in the league.
Mewis will become only the second member of the Americans' 2023 World Cup squad to not play in the NWSL, joining captain Lindsey Horan, who plays for Lyon in France.
There have been plenty of Americans to play in the WSL in the past, including Sam Mewis, Kristie's younger sister, who played for Manchester City.
