Sam Kerr fired back at Arsenal fans with a hilarious response after the Chelsea superstar was taunted following her side's 4-1 defeat by the Gunners.

Jonas Eidevalli's side got one over their rivals last weekend, with the north Londoners running out resounding winners in front of a league-record crowd of 59,042 at the Emirates Stadium.

Kerr could only watch on as Alessia Russo bagged twice while Amanda Illestedt and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd got on the scoresheet.

The emphatic victory saw Arsenal go level with Chelsea on 22 points, only trailing the Blues on goal difference, while Mary Fowler's Manchester City are three points behind in third.

And on her way out of north London, Kerr was hit by a wave of jubilant Arsenal fans, who initially acted like she couldn't hear the vociferous supporters.

But she came up with the perfect answer, smirking while holding aloft four fingers to signify the number of league titles she has won at Stamford Bridge.

Before Kerr's quiet day, Chelsea manager Emma Hayes had explained why the Matildas' captain had needed a break from last week's international duties in Canada.

'People need to understand that Sam played through the World Cup with a significant calf injury and came back injured and has been carrying that injury throughout, plus an issue within her foot,' Hayes told the BBC.

'What she's done for her club and country over the past four, five years is nothing short of remarkable - but her body couldn't withstand much more, so she's needed the time to get herself right, because she hasn't been 100 per cent.'
