Steven Gerrard has publicly claimed he does not want to sign Mason Greenwood for Saudi Arabia Pro League side Al Ettifaq.
The Liverpool legend took to social media yesterday to say that any move by his new club for Greenwood was ‘fake news’.
The 21-year-old forward can leave Old Trafford following the club’s internal investigation into a number of serious criminal allegations that have since been dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.
Saudi Arabia have spent the summer transfer window spending mammoth amounts of money on signing some of football’s most high-profile players, including reigning Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema and Sadio Mane, as well as Gerrard’s former Liverpool team-mate Jordan Henderson.
But there is believed to be hesitancy from within the Saudi Pro League to sign Greenwood given the risk of a public backlash.
Roma, managed by former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, are also reported to have distanced themselves from a move for Greenwood.
A number of clubs in Turkey are believed to be considering loan moves, including Galatasaray and Besiktas.
