England Women World Cup Ratings: Mary Earps proved she's the world's BEST

England's Women's World Cup campaign ended in heartbreak on Sunday as they were beaten 1-0 by Spain in the final.

The loss was just their second in Sarina Wiegman's 39 games in charge, and ended a stellar tournament from the European champions.

Mary Earps was awarded the golden glove after an excellent seven games in goal, which included a stunning penalty save in the final.

England's Euros hero Beth Mead was absent through injury, but Lauren Hemp was a more than adequate replacement after being moved into the centre rather than playing on the wing.

Here, Kathryn Batte runs through how each of the Lionesses got on in Australia and New Zealand.

Mary Earps - 9/10

Showed why she is the best goalkeeper in the world and made a mockery of Nike’s decision not to sell her shirt. Kept England in a number of games with important saves and made a memorable penalty save in the final.

Lucy Bronze - 7/10

Stepped up at crucial times and used her exprience at key moments including the penalty shoot-out against Nigeria. Kept Colombia’s Linda Caicedo quiet in the quarter-final but struggled against Spain in the final.

Millie Bright - 8/10

Quickly got over a rusty performance in the first game to be England’s rock at the back. Led by example.

Alex Greenwood - 9/10

Excellent from start to finish. Greenwood showed why she is one of the best ball-playing centre backs in the world. Ended the final with a blood-soaked bandage to sum up the Lionesses’ fighting spirit.

Jess Carter - 8/10

Excelled in a back three with calm and composed performances. Likely to be a key member of this squad moving forward.

Rachel Daly - 7/10

Shrugged off the disappointment of not starting as a centre forward to play an important role at left-wing back. Occasionally vulnerable in defence but a constant threat going forwards.

Niamh Charles - 6/10

Two substitute appearances in her first major tournament will have provided plenty of experience. Will hope to use this as a building block for the future.

Keira Walsh - 6.5/10

Thought her tournament was over after picking up a knee injury against Denmark but returned two games later. The 3-4-1-2 system did not seem to suit her as well as a 4-3-3 and she was unable to have the impact we have come to expect.

Georgia Stanway - 8/10

Held the midfield together for much of the tournament and was influential against Colombia and Australia but was unable to get near Spain’s midfield in the final.

Ella Toone - 6/10

Struggled to make an impact in the first two games before losing her place to Lauren James. Came back into the team following James’ suspension and scored a memorable goal in the semi-final.

Laura Coombs 6/10

Replaced Walsh off the bench in the Denmark game but did not do enough to start the subsequent match against China, where she came on as a substitute again.

Katie Zelem 7/10

Can be proud of her impressive performance against China but did not play again once Walsh returned to fitness. Will feel she could have been given more minutes.

Lauren James - 7/10

Set the tournament alight with sparkling performances against Denmark and China but let herself down when she was sent off for stepping on an opponent against Nigeria. Will be left wondering what could have been but showed she can be a future star of this team.

Alessia Russo - 7.5/10

Took a while to get going but grew into the tournament, scoring the winner against Colombia before wrapping up the semi-final victory over Australia. Will have been disappointed to have been hooked at half-time in the final.

Lauren Hemp - 8.5/10

Looked like a different player after moving into a central forward role against China. England’s best attacking outlet throughout the knockouts and will feel this was her breakout tournament. Agonisingly close to opening the scoring in the final with a shot that hit the bar.

Chloe Kelly - 7/10

Ended up being used more as an impact substitute after struggling to get going in the first two games but still had important contributions, with her powerful penalty sending England through to the quarter-finals.

Bethany England 6.5/10

Will be happy to have finally got minutes at a tournament after not playing at the Euros. A memorable moment scoring in the shoot-out win over Nigeria but never really got long enough on the pitch to make an impact in the games she came off the bench.

Sarina Wiegman - 8/10

Found solutions to a number of problems before and during the tournament to guide England to another major final. The switch to a 3-4-1-2 in the third group game saw performances improve after a slow start but the final was one game too far.
