Love triangle involving 2 stars to feature in England semi-final with Australia

England and Australia will renew their sporting rivalry on Wednesday in the Women's World Cup semi-final on Wednesday, and US star Kristie Mewis is likely to be a keen observer.

The USA's bid for a third consecutive World Cup triumph ended in dramatic fashion at the round of 16 stage when they were beaten on penalties by Sweden, but Mewis still has plenty of interest in the tournament.

That is due to the fact that she is currently dating Australia striker Sam Kerr, and previously dated England forward Rachel Daly.

Mewis and Daly met while playing together for US side Houston Dash, and started a relationship in November 2017 before calling it quits two years later. The pair did not publically reveal the reason for their break-up. They continued playing for the same team until 2021, when Mewis moved onto her current club NJ/NY Gotham FC, while Daly is now back in England at Aston Villa.

In 2021, Mewis began dating Kerr. The exact start date of their relationship is unknown, but Mewis was seen comforting Kerr on the pitch when the USA beat Australia in the bronze medal match at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

Shortly afterwards, the pair confirmed their relationship on Instagram by posting a photo of themselves kissing each other.

They became a couple just months after Kerr's seven-year relationship with fellow footballer Nikki Stanton came to an end. Kerr and Stanton briefly played together for Chicago Red Stars between 2018 and 2019.

Kerr is widely recognised as one of the best female players on the planet, but has had to wait for her moment at the World Cup after sitting out the entire group stage with a calf injury.

She has returned to feature in Australia's last two matches, helping her side into the last four.

The team's quarter-final victory against France smashed viewing figures in Australia, and those numbers are likely to be broken once more when they take on England as they aim to make their first ever World Cup final.

Unlike Kerr, Daly has played in every game Down Under, but having finished as the top scorer in the WSL last season, she has been used out of position by Sarina Wiegman, largely operating as a left wing-back rather than up front.

England have also never been to a final, having been knocked out at the semi-final stage in 2015 and 2019.

One year on from winning the Euros, Daly will look to help her team overcome the semi-final hurdle on the world stage and book their place in the showpiece event against either Spain or Sweden next Sunday.
