Post-match press conferences turn farcical, Lionesses pay tribute to Francis

England took a step closer to securing their place in knockout phase of the World Cup with a 1-0 win over Denmark.

Lauren James' sixth minute stunner was enough to see the Lionesses pick up their second victory in Group D.

However, the win will be shadowed by the injury suffered by Keira Walsh, who was stretchered off after suffering a knee injury.

England will advance as group winners if they beat third-placed China at Hindmarsh Stadium on Tuesday.

Mail Sport's KATHRYN BATTE brings you the things that you may have missed from the tournament on Friday.

Farcical press conferences

The post-match press conferences turned farcical here on Friday after a FIFA official stopped journalists from placing their phones on the top table to record proceedings.

The member of staff claimed this was 'protocol', despite not being enforced at earlier matches.

Journalists were advised to stand under the speakers to record, an impractical suggestion given how busy the room was.

Media were then only allowed to ask player of the match Lauren James three questions before her press conference ended.

Disappointing press box

The Sydney Football Stadium is impressive but it was disappointing that much of the written press were seated inside, rather than outside for England's game.

It is impossible to capture the atmosphere when you are watching the game from behind a window, never mind the inferior view of the pitch.

It seemed to be mainly English media seated inside, with the majority of the Danish press pack outside.

Tribute is paid to Francis

England's players wore black armbands against Denmark in honour of Trevor Francis, who passed away earlier this week.

Francis made 52 appearances for the Three Lions.
