In the absence of captain Becky Sauerbrunn due to a foot injury, US women's coach Vlatko Andonovski has named two players as co-captains for the 2023 Women's World Cup.

The coach named midfielder Lindsey Horan and forward Alex Morgan as captains of the team, according to a press release.

According to the release, when both Horan and Morgan are on the pitch at the same time, Horan will be wearing the captain's armband.

Morgan is the player on the roster with the most caps, having played for the USWNT 206 times. Horan has been capped 128 times by the national team.

The decision was made over the likes of other established members of the USWNT including Megan Rapinoe, Crystal Dunn, Kelley O'Hara and Julie Ertz.

Morgan has started 22 matches as a captain and wore the armband three times during the 2019 Women's World Cup.

Horan has started as captain nine times and has worn the band five times in 2022. She's done that most recently during the SheBelieves Cup in Nashville this year.

According to US Soccer, it's tradition for players to wear the captain's band in the game that they are honored for earning their 100th and 200th caps.

The USWNT is getting ready to defend their World Cup title and become the fifth nation in the world to have won five World Cup titles - joining the Brazilian men's national team.

Their first match takes place on July 22 against Vietnam in Auckland, New Zealand.
