The Football Association has announced plans to shake up the women’s football pyramid with changes to promotion and relegation between Tiers 2 and 3 set to be implemented next season.
The changes, which are subject to ratification by the FA council, will see two teams promoted to the Women’s Championship and two teams relegated.
The current system sees one team relegated, with the winners of the Northern and Southern National League Premier Divisions taking part in a play-off to gain promotion to the Championship.
The new pyramid structure would mean the winners of both divisions would automatically be promoted while two teams would drop out of Tier 2 and into Tier 3.
The play-off fixture will still go ahead this season. Nottingham Forest, Burnley and Wolves are all battling it out to finish top in the Northern Division while Watford, Ipswich and Oxford United are all in contention in the Southern league.
Coventry United were relegated from the Championship this season while Sunderland are currently second from bottom.
The structural change will not impact the Women’s Super League, which sees one team relegated and one team promoted from the Championship.
Four teams are in danger of being relegated from the top flight this season.
Leicester are bottom of the table with 10 points while Reading are one point ahead on 11. Brighton are third from bottom on 12 points while Tottenham have 13.
