Real Sociedad's Takefusa Kubo netted his sixth goal of the La Liga campaign in a 2-0 win over Getafe on Saturday, setting the single-season scoring record for a Japanese player in Spain's top flight.

The Samurai Blue attacker hit Sociedad's second against visiting Getafe at Reale Arena to break the previous scoring mark set by former Japan international Takashi Inui for Eibar in 2017-18.

Mikel Oyarzabal nodded home in first-half stoppage time to give La Real the lead before Kubo capped a fine attack down the left on the hour mark by tapping in Mikel Merino's cross.

"There haven't been many Japanese players in La Liga, so it's a different situation to a Spanish player scoring six goals," Kubo said in a TV interview.

Sociedad won their second straight home game and sit fourth in the league, on course for qualification for next season's Champions League.

Having joined Sociedad permanently for his fourth La Liga season, the 21-year-old Barcelona youth product has found a team where he can showcase his attacking talent following loan spells at Mallorca, Villarreal and Getafe during his three previous seasons under contract with Real Madrid.

"We're returning to a La Real who impose ourselves on our rivals, which we were doing before we dropped off a bit," Kubo said of Sociedad's recent form. "A win at home in front of the fans is always important."
