After England had been pegged back by Brazil’s last minute equaliser, Chloe Kelly scored the penalty that clinched the first ever women’s edition of the Finalissma - nearly nine months on from her winner against Germany in the Euros final.

It is another trophy and another Wembley victory in front of another sold-out crowd. Forget watching Brazil, this is England under Sarina Wiegman. It is now 30 games unbeaten for the Lionesses boss.

‘I feel privileged [to have gone 30 games unbeaten], I’m very happy working here,’ Wiegman said. ‘It’s such an incredible group.

‘We practiced [penalties] yesterday and before the Euros we practiced a lot. We just repeated it yesterday in case. We knew what to do and we did good.’

Toone’s first half goal came from a free-flowing team move any Brazilian side would have been proud of and such was the slickness of the build up, the normally composed Wiegman turned around to her coaching staff and mouthed ‘wow what a goal!’

This is an England team that continues to win on and off the pitch. The Lionesses, who recently secured a government pledge for girls to have equal access to football and school sport, were playing in their new blue shorts after negotiations with Nike to scrap their all-white kit due to concerns around playing while on their periods.

It seems there is nothing this team can’t do. With just over three months to go until the World Cup, Wiegman and England look unstoppable.

This game against Brazil was always going to be a tougher test than February’s Arnold Clark Cup fixtures against lower-ranked opposition. The South Americans are always intriguing opponents simply because it is difficult to know how good they are until you watch them play - but they failed to really lay a glove on England in the first half.

Lucy Bronze nearly opened the scoring inside 12 minutes but her 25-yard strike was palmed away by goalkeeper Leticia. England’s sustained dominance eventually led to a breakthrough mid-way through the first half.

Lauren James threaded the ball through to Bronze down the right, who played a one-two with Georgia Stanway before teeing up Toone to fire into the bottom left corner. James looked to have doubled England’s lead when she chipped a finish into the roof of the net but was correctly flagged offside.

James continued to cause problems for the Brazilian defence and nearly created a second when her cross found Lauren Hemp at the back-post, but the winger could only send a header straight at Leticia.

Brazil looked much more threatening after making two attacking changes at half-time. Adriana should really have levelled when she was picked out by Geyse in the box but mis-hit her shot before England cleared.

Earps then made a fantastic one-handed save to tip Geyse’ powerful effort over the bar. But just as it looked as if the Lionesses were seeing out the game, a dramatic equaliser came in the third minute of stoppage time as Andressa tapped in from two-yards after Earps dropped the ball at her feet.

The goalkeeper, though, did not let that late error affect her in the shoot-out - making an important stop from Tamires after Toone had just missed for England. Georgia Stanway, Alex Greenwood and Rachel Daly had all converted before Kelly stepped up with the chance to win. She made no mistake.

‘This feels like home,’ the match-winner said at full-time. Wembley is now the Lionesses and Kelly’s special place.
