Chelsea midfielder Melanie Leupolz has poked fun at herself after being left bloodied during the Blues' Womens Champions League victory over Lyon on Thursday.

Emma Hayes' side came out victors on penalties to seal their place in the WCL semi-finals after a dramatic late strike took the game to a shoot-out.

The Blues left everything on the pitch, as was clear when Leupolz was left with blood all over her face following a nasty clash of heads.

Taking to Instagram after the game the midfielder made light of the clash of heads as she wrote: 'At least the colour of my nails are fitting!'

The horrendous facial injury was following a clash with Lyon's Danielle van de Donk and meant that Leupolz was forced off in the second half.

There was controversy as the midfielder fell to the ground at Stamford Bridge, but the match officials refused to stop the match despite the head injury.

Despite receiving treatment, Leupolz's nose did not stop pouring with blood and resulted in Sophie Ingle replacing her.

The Blues managed to come out on top in her absence, with Ann-Katrin Berger, the Chelsea goalkeeper, the hero of the shoot-out after saving two penalties to see her side into the next round.

Speaking after the match, head coach Hayes discussed the importance of the shot-stopper.

She said: 'She's someone who thrives in big moments.

'She's done that her entire career. She's probably the best penalty saving goalkeeper I've ever worked with so I felt really confident going into the penalty shootout, even if I didn't look it.

'Every day [in training] everyone always hates going up against her. I felt this was her moment after everything she has gone through.'

Chelsea will be hoping that they can make it to the final as they face Barcelona in the last-4 of the competition following the dramatic win.
