On this day in 2006, Man Utd signed Patrice Evra
Originally an attacker, he primarily plays as a left-back. Evra, whom Sir Alex Ferguson praised for his leadership, also describing him as one of the best left-backs in Europe, has served as captain for both Manchester United and France. The defender made 379 appearances for Manchester United and won 10 major honours.
Regarded as one of the best players in the world in his position during his prime, Evra is a fast, energetic and athletic left-back, who, despite his size, is physically strong, and good in the air, which also allows him to be deployed as a centre-back on occasion; in addition to his physical attributes, he is also comfortable on the ball and adept at getting into attacking positions as a wing-back, where he can deliver crosses to teammates, having functioned as a winger earlier on in his career.
On this day in 1959, Chelsea manager Sarri was born
On 14 July 2018, Sarri was appointed manager of Chelsea, replacing Antonio Conte who was sacked the day before. In his first competitive game on 5 August, the team lost the 2018 FA Community Shield 2–0 to Manchester City at Wembley Stadium. The following week he managed to record his first win as Chelsea manager in a 3–0 win away to Huddersfield Town in the Premier League.
From a tactical standpoint, Sarri is known for his intelligence, attention to detail, and his meticulous approach as a manager when it comes to preparing matches during weekly training sessions. He often has his team prepare many different plays on set-pieces.
On this day in 2006, Del Piero broke Juventus scoring record
The forward joined the club in 1993, making his debut that September. Over the next twelve years, he made a total of 436 appearances, scoring 175 goals through the 2004-05 season while winning a load of silverware that includes five league titles, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the Intercontinental Cup.
By the time Juventus faced Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia in January 2006, del Piero had taken his goal tally to 182, matching the club record set by Giampiero Boniperti, who played there from 1946 to 1961. Juventus won 4-1 with a hat-trick from del Piero, lifting him to a new club record of 185 goals.
By the time he left the club in 2012, after winning another league title in his last year, he had pushed the scoring record to 289 in 691 appearances.
On this day in 1995, Man Utd signed Andy Cole
Cole's career lasted from 1988 to 2008. He is most notably remembered for his time in the Premier League, with Manchester United, where he spent six years of his career, winning numerous trophies in the process. He is the third-highest goalscorer in Premier League history with 187 goals.
He also played in the top division of English football for Arsenal, Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers, Fulham, Manchester City, Portsmouth and Sunderland.
On this day in 1978, Graeme Souness joined Liverpool
Souness was the captain of the successful Liverpool team of the early 1980s, player-manager of Rangers in the late 1980s and captain of the Scotland. He also played for Tottenham Hotspur, Middlesbrough and Sampdoria.
Souness' managerial career began when he joined Rangers, leading them to three Scottish titles and four league cups, before joining Liverpool as manager. He went on to become manager of Galatasaray, Southampton, Torino, Benfica, Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United.
On this day in 1992, Inter right-back Vrsaljko was born
Vrsaljko is a Croatian player who plays as a right back for Inter, on loan from Atlético Madrid.
In May 2018, he was named in Croatia's squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He started in six of the seven matches in the team's runners-up finish.
On this day in 1984, Ex-Gunner Chamakh was born
Chamakh joined Arsenal on a free transfer after agreeing a four-year contract with the club. Whilst with the Gunners, he helped take the club to the League Cup final of 2011. During his stay at the Emirates, Chamakh also became the first player in Champions League history to score in six consecutive games.
He is described as a prototypical target man and is noted for his "link-up play", "tall stature" and "excellent heading ability"
On this day in 2010, Marta won her fifth consecutive FIFA World Player of the Year award
After finishing third in voting for 2004 and second in 2005, the Brazilian forward finally won her first World Player of the Year award in 2006 while playing for Umeå in Sweden, then repeated as winner in 2007 and 2008. In 2009, she moved to the US to play for the Los Angeles Sol and finished the season as the league's top scorer, leading to her record fourth World Player of the Year award
On this day in 1995, Pierre van Hooijdonk signed for Celtic
Van Hooijdonk is a retired Dutch player who played as a striker. He had spells with clubs across Europe where he was a prolific goal scorer.
He was played for Celtic, Nottingham Forest, Benfica, Feyenoord and Fenerbahce.
On this day in 1915, Inter beat Vicenza 16-0
Their 16-0 scoreline remains a club record. Vicenza did better in the return fixture, holding Inter to a scoreless draw, but Inter still managed to top the group and advance to the Northern Italy final group, where they finished third behind Genoa and Torino.
