'Vardy would have been perfect for Leipzig'

The England international was linked with a move to the German side two years ago but was considered too old and the club admit he would have suited their style of football

Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy would have been perfect for RB Leipzig, according to the club’s sporting director Ralf Rangnick.

The England international was linked with a move to the German side two years ago but Rangnick admitted they were put off by the striker's age, he was 27 at the time.

Vardy went on to claim the Premier League title with Leicester last season, scoring 24 goals along the way and Rangnick admits he would have been perfect for his side.

“An English football consultant told me three years ago: ‘I would have a player for you who would fit perfectly with your football. But he's probably already too old',” he told Blick.

“It was about Jamie Vardy, and because he was too old for us, we did not get him. The way he plays, he would have fit perfectly with us.”

The Bundesliga side have been the surprise package of the season in Germany, leading the table ahead of Bayern Munich until Saturday when they were knocked off the top after a first defeat of the campaign to Ingolstadt.

However, Rangnick has played down comparisons with Leicester particularly when asked what his side have in common with Claudio Ranieri’s men.

“The first three letters,” he said. "I do not think it's realistic to be this season's champion. In the normal case, Bayern Munich takes the title.”
