On this day in 2016, Ronaldo won the Ballon d'Or for the 4th time

Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Ballon d’Or award for the fourth time, capping a season in which his Portugal side won Euro 2016 and his club, Real Madrid, took the Champions League.

Ronaldo is now one short of his Barcelona rival Lionel Messi’s record tally of five. Messi finished second this time. Atlético Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann came third, with Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy finishing eighth and his team-mate Riyad Mahrez seventh.

With the famous goal of Aragon, Real Madrid defeats Barcelona 4-1 and obtains the Spanish Super Cup.

On this day in 1996, Southgate made his debut for England

Southgate made 57 appearances for the England national team between 1995 and 2004.

Southgate made his debut for England as a substitute against Portugal in December 1995 under the management of Terry Venables. Southgate played every minute of their matches as hosts England reached the semi-final of UEFA Euro 1996, in which they faced Germany. The match was determined in a penalty shoot-out; Southgate's penalty was saved, and England were eliminated.

On this day in 1984, Liverpool cult hero Agger born

Agger was described as a fine reader of the game, comfortable on the ball and blessed with a ferocious shot.

He started his senior career with Brøndby before moving to Liverpool in January 2006. He made 175 Premier League appearances for the club (232 total) and won the League Cup and Community Shield. Agger returned to Brøndby for personal reasons in August 2014, and retired two years later at the age of 31.

His career total of 1,468 makes him the highest goalscorer in world history, over subsequent--and more familiar--luminaries such as Pelé (1,284 in all competitions) and Gerd Müller (1,461 in all competitions).

On this day in 1993, Sao Paulo won their second consecutive Intercontinental Cup

They beat European Cup runners-up AC Milan at the National Stadium in Tokyo.

São Paulo, who had won the previous Cup over Barcelona, took the lead with a 19th-minute goal from striker Palhinha, Milan equalized after the break with a 48th-minute goal from forward Daniele Massaro, but the Brazilian side quickly regained the lead 11 minutes later with a goal from midfielder Toninho Cerezo.

Milan striker Jean-Pierre Papin scored a late equalizer in the 81st minute, but as extra time loomed, São Paulo forward Müller scored the match-winner with only 2 minutes remaining.
