Courtois, Boateng, Hazard, Lukaku... Check out AF's November Flops of the Month!

Welcome to All Football’s November Flops of the Month. Here, we pick a 18-man squad in which the players fail to deliver in November.

LAST TIME OUT...

Last month we published the first ever All Football Flops of the Month squad, Sergio Ramos, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Alexis Sanchez were among those included in the starting line-up.

In the end, Ramos has been selected as the Captain of the Flops by AFers with 41.7% of votes, Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku came second and third, getting 16.5% and 13.3% of votes respectively.

GK: Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid)

When Courtois joined Real Madrid for €35m, the deal was seen as a bargain considering the 26-year-old has been one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

However, he first conceded five goals against Barcelona in late October, before letting in another five with Belgium when they were beaten by Switzerland.

He has been made a scapegoat for Los Blancos’ leaky defence, but we certainly have not seen the best of him yet.

DF: Wesley Hoedt (Southampton)

Just one and a half year ago Wesley Hoedt was considered one of the brightest products from the latest Dutch generation - and now he is Premier League’s own goal king.

Hoedt’s own goals against Liverpool and Manchester City made Saints fans wonder why Mark Hughes kept playing him when they have so many options at the back.

His unceremonious tendency to dribble has also created deep problems, as Fulham came back to beat Southampton 3-2 last weekend.

He has yet to score for the Saints this season, but already has done so for Liverpool and Man City. Certainly he wished he was playing for those big clubs.

DF: David Luiz (Chelsea)

Some find it hard to convince themselves that David Luiz is a proper defender, and now they have even more doubt.

Luiz was particularly at fault when Chelsea suffered a 3-1 defeat to London rivals Tottenham.

When Harry Kane shooted from distance, Luiz opted to dodge it rather than block it; What’s more, Son Heung-min skipped past the Brazilian international with ease before completing a sweet solo goal.

DF: Jerome Boateng (Bayern Munich)

When the manager of Bundesliga second-bottom side have a laugh at the reigning champions for poor defending, it’s either he has gone insane or just that they’re too bad.

For Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng, unfortunately the former case applies to him.

Nico Kovac’s side condeded two late goals in final ten minutes in a 3-3 draw against Fortuna Dusseldorf as Boateng tried to play Dodi Lukebakio offside but simply failed to do so.

“No coach in the world should stand for Boateng playing like that,” said Dusseldorf manager Friedham Funkel. “He's too laid back to run and he wants to avoid having to duel Lukebakio. That should not be happening.”

What’s more, Boateng becomes the first player to be listed as All Football Flops of the Month for more than once.

DF: Djibril Sidibe (Monaco)

Things happen so quickly in football that Djibril Sidibe is wondering how he went from heaven to hell in just four month’s time.

Winning the World Cup with France national team was apparently the highlight of his career, but when he returned to Monaco his form dipped noticeably.

Thierry Henry is struggling to guide the 2016/17 Ligue 1 champions out of relegation zone - in fact, they have just won their first game since Henry took charge on October 13th.

However, Sidibe did not feature in that 1-0 win over Caen, because he has been left out of the squad due to slight injury.

20-year-old Ronael Pierre-Gabriel has so far done well when he is called upon, so he might as well become Henry’s first choice for right back going forward.

DMF: Nemanja Matic (Manchester United)

It’s easy to say ‘I’m a Mourinho guy’, but it’s not quite easy to back it up considering Manchester United’s current plight.

Matic has always been emphasizing his desire to fight for Mourinho through thick and thin. However, it’s been a dip in form for Matic in which Manchester United fans are not so satisfied with.

It’s true that his holds a pass success rate of over 84 in all matches played in November, but he made only nine tackles and eight interceptions in five games.

LW: Eden Hazard (Chelsea)

Eden Hazard is of course a harsh inclusion, but hey, the standard for him is certainly higher, isn’t it?

Assisting once and scoring none in the whole of November is definitely below his ever-so-high standard.

And when Chelsea need him most in the London derby against Tottenham Hotspur, he even went missing and was outplayed by Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and co.

Hazard’s younger brother, Thorgan, has been in fine form though, having recorded five goals and two assists last month for club and country.

AMF: Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich)

Let’s not forget Franck Ribery is already 35 years old. There’s no excuse for hitting journalists, however.

Bayern Munich are without a win at home for four successive Bundesliga matches - their worst since 1994, but their most experienced player decided to make the matter worse.

Following the 3-2 Klassiker defeat to Borussia Dortmund on November 10th, Ribery was angered by the analysis of beIN Sports worker Patrick Guillou and then hit him three times as he left Signal Iduna Park.

The former France international has finally ended his goal drought on 27th when Bayern beat Benfica 5-1 in Champions League, but is yet to provide an assist this season though.

RW: Gareth Bale (Real Madrid)

Real Madrid fans had a wishful thinking that Gareth Bale could finally become the main man at Bernabeau when Cristiano Ronaldo left for Juventus.

Now they just wish Bale could return to his normal self.

The 29-year-old Welshman couldn’t find his feet this season as his goal drought in La Liga extends to two and a half months to date.

While Los Blancos slowly find their firepower back, Bale is still searching for best form.

Take nothing away from him though, Champions League is a far better battleground: He has scored or assisted in his last five Champions League games - a personal record.

FW: Romelu Lukaku (Manchester United)

Now the pundits and former Manchester United players are causing more and more unrest just by criticizing Romelu Lukaku. But except Jose Mourinho, who would blame them though? 

Since the last time Lukaku found the net at Old Trafford on March 31st, Manchester City have already scored 83 goals and Alexis Sanchez collected £12m in wages.

Home and away, he has now gone 1345 competitive minutes without scoring - but his weight seems to be growing. 

His response? “Criticism about my physique? That’s some BS! Yeah, that’s some BS. I’m one of the strongest players in the league.”

FW: Gonzalo Higuain (AC Milan)

You get extra incentive when you have the chance to face your former club who dumped you for someone (Cristiano Ronaldo) else.

Nevertheless, the adrenaline level for Gonzalo Higuain was too high that he missed a penalty before getting sent off for abusive language towards referee in the match against Juventus.

Fans would feel the Argentina international was hard done by because he tried so hard in the game, but there’s no hiding place that he has no goals to his name in November.

ON THE BENCH:

Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich)

Is Neuer world-class any more? Statistics suggest that it is past his golden days.

After 12 games of new Bundesliga season, Neuer’s save success percentage is second-bottom and he gets only two clean sheets up until now.

Aleksandr Golovin (Monaco)

Golovin is arguably the brightest up-and-coming star in 2018 World Cup and rumours were saying that Chelsea, Arsenal and Barcelona wanted him.

He ended up at Monaco, but it’s still a big money move though. And he is searching for his first goal in France, with his side sitting second-bottom of the table.

Max Meyer (Crystal Palace)

Max Meyer’s agent said his client is already a world-class player when they decided against the contract extension offer from Schalke 04.

He was compared to Lionel Messi in Germany, but neither Barcelona nor other European giants wanted him in the summer.

He now fails to secure a starting position for Palace, and he is yet to handle the physicality of the Premier League.

Luciano Vietto (Fulham)

Luciano Vietto has played for some famous La Liga clubs such as Atletico Madrid, Villarreal, Sevilla and Valencia. So when he joined Fulham on loan he was seen as a marquee signing.

He is still finding his feet in the Premier League, just like his team, but when new manager Claudio Ranieri decided to drop him from the starting line-up, they finally secured their first wins in 10 league games.

Ousmane Dembele (Barcelona)

Everything went wrong for Ousmane Dembele in November - until he got that equalizing goal for Barcelona against Atletico Madrid on 25th.

Dembele went AWOL in training and later told the club that he was sick, but such indisciplined behaviour lead to him being dropped from Ernesto Valverde’s squads.

Rumours earlier said that Dembele has decided to leave the club in January.

Alexis Sanchez (Manchester United)

Alexis Sanchez is Premier League’s top earner with wages more than £500,000-a-week at Manchester United.

November is another disappointing month for him as he played only less than 200 minutes of football and got no goal.

But he won’t be selected for All Football Flops of the Month next time out, because Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Sanchez has suffered aggressive hamstring injury and wouldn’t play again in 2018.

Michy Batshuayi (Valencia)

Valencia are the third lowest scoring team in La Liga this season with only 11 goals in the first 13 rounds - and Batshuayi has only contributed to one of them.

What’s more, Batshuayi has seen his game time limited in November, getting only 65 minutes from Valencia.

There has been rumours that his loan deal from Chelsea would be cut short in January.

MANAGER: Thierry Henry (Monaco)

Just another example that a great footballer does not necessarily become a great manager. We hope you can work out the solution and not return to the pundit role, though.
