On this day in 2016, 71 people tragically lost their lives in Chapecoense air disaster

They promised to come back as heroes. But, they left us, as heroes, forever.

71 people were killed when a plane carrying members of the Brazilian football team Chapecoense crashed. Chapecoense were flying to play a Copa Sudamerica finals match against Atlético Nacional on Wednesday in Medellin.

19 Chapecoense players were killed, goalie Jakson Follmann and two of his teammates, defenders Alan Ruschel and Helio Neto survived the crash along with two aircraft crew members and a journalist. First team goalkeeper Danilo, who initially survived the crash was able to call his wife but succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

On this day in 2015, Vardy scored for the 11th match in a row to break Van Nistelrooy's EPL record

The Leicester striker netted in the first half of his side's 1-1 draw against Manchester United.

Vardy took Fuchs' pass in his stride and fired an unerring low finish past De Gea - and the tributes came instantly from the football world.

Vardy broke former United star Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record with this goal in his 11th consecutive game.

On this day in 2005, Ronaldinho was awarded the Ballon d'Or

The 2005 Ballon d'Or, given to the best football player in Europe as judged by a panel of sports journalists from UEFA member countries, was delivered to the Brazilian midfielder Ronaldinho on 28 November.

Ronaldinho won his well deserved Ballon d'Or and became 5th Barcelona player to win it.

On this day in 2000, Real Madrid lost 2-1 to Boca in Intercontinental Cup final

Led by the attacking trio of Raúl, Guti, and Luís Figo, Real Madrid were heavily favored over Copa Libertadores champions Boca Juniors, but before a crowd of over 52,000 at the National Stadium in Tokyo, the Spaniards were stunned to find themselves down 2-0 after only five minutes, with both goals delivered by forward Martín Palermo.

Real Madrid back Roberto Carlos pulled one back in the 11th minute. But even though they enjoyed the lion's share of possession, they could not crack the Boca defence again.

On this day in 1999, Goalkeeper Chilavert scored a hat-trick

Vélez Sársfield defeated Ferro Carril Oeste 6-1 in an Argentina top flight match with a hat-trick from an unlikely source, their goalkeeper Chilavert.

In addition to being a strong goalkeeper, he was a skilled free kick marksman, often taking his side's penalty kicks. In the match against Ferro, in fact, all three of his goals came from the spot.

In all, Chilavert scored a total of 62 goals in club and international competitions during his career.

On this day in 1995, Ajax claimed their second Intercontinental Cup by defeating Grêmio on penalties

In the 1995 Final, the two teams were even at 0-0 at the end of extra time, despite the Brazilian side losing defender Catalino Rivarola to a red card in the 57th minute. In penalties, the shooters got off to a rough start with Ajax keeper Edwin Van der Sar saving the first shot from midfielder Dinho.

While the next two shots, from Ajax forward Patrick Kluivert and Grêmio defender Francisco Arce, were off target. The remaining kicks were converted, however, with Ajax centre back Danny Blind scoring the decisive shot. Blind was subsequently chosen as man of the match.

On this day in 1964, Tommy Ross scored three times in 90 seconds to record the world's fastest hat-trick

Ross County were hosting Nairn County in a Scottish Highland League match when Ross got his record. And that wasn't his only hat-trick of the day; he put the ball in the net a total of seven times, with Jim Hosie adding the other as Ross County won 8-1.

Although Ross's hat-trick beat the previous record of two and a half minutes, the club did not submit the achievement to the Guinness Book of World Records because they mistakenly believed that they needed two timekeepers to authenticate it and they had only one. The mistake was eventually corrected, however, and Ross now holds the official record.
