Vincenzo Iaquinta says prosecutors have “ruined my life when I didn’t do anything”, after being sentenced to two years in prison.
The former Juventus and Italy striker has been found guilty of a firearms offence, though a charge of conspiring to aid the mafia was dropped.
He has been sentenced to two years in prison, though he’ll appeal, while his father is facing 19 years inside.
“It’s shameful,” Iaquinta told reporters outside the court house.
“They’ve ruined my life when I didn’t do anything, I’ve been suffering like a dog for four years, as have my family and my children, when I haven’t even done anything.
“In our family we don’t even know what the ‘Ndrangheta is, they’ve ruined my life for nothing.
“They found me guilty because I’m Calabrian, but I won a World Cup. Justice will be done for us, today a sentence was handed without a trial.”
