Aguero is gaining on Alan Shearer's Premier League hat-trick record

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero is gaining on Alan Shearer at the top of the all-time Premier League hat-trick list following his three goals on Sunday.

The 30-year-old scored three as the reigning champions eased past Huddersfield 6-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

Aguero is now just two hat-tricks away from equalling Shearer's record of 11 Premier League hat-tricks.

Shearer scored his hat-tricks across six years, from 1993-1999, getting nine during his time at Blackburn and two when at Newcastle.

He notched an emphatic five hat-tricks in 1995 during his time at Ewood Park.

Aguero has taken one year longer than the former England striker to reach nine hat-tricks, but has scored three this year.

The opponents on the receiving end of the Argentinian's deadliness in front goal have been Wigan, Tottenham, QPR, Newcastle (twice), Chelsea, Watford, Leicester and most recently Huddersfield.

Behind Shearer and Aguero in the all-time Premier League hat-trick list are former Liverpool strikers Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen. Fowler also has nine, while Owen is on eight.

Ex-Arsenal forward Thierry Henry and Tottenham and England striker Harry Kane are tied with Owen on eight hat-tricks.

At 25 years old Kane also has the opportunity to catch Shearer with his eight trebles coming over just two years. The 2018 World Cup Golden Boot winner scored six of those in 2017.

Kane scored his eight hat-tricks against Leicester (twice), Bournemouth, West Brom, Stoke, Hull, Burnley and Southampton.

Wayne Rooney hit seven hat-tricks during his time in the top flight, with six of them coming at Manchester United while Luis Suarez scored six during his three years at Liverpool.

Behind them are five players tied on five hat-tricks each. Dimitar Berbatov scored five during his spells at Tottenham and United while Andy Cole notched five trebles at Newcastle and United.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, Robin van Persie and Ian Wright are the other strikers tied on five hat-tricks.
