Leeds have launched a shock bid to sign Barry Douglas from Wolves, Sportsmail can reveal.

Douglas was one of Nuno Espirito Santo’s best performers last season but with the imminent arrival of Jonny Castro from Atletico Madrid, the Wolves manager is prepared to sanction a sale.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa sees the 28-year-old as the ideal left wing-back to help challenge for Championship promotion after Douglas scored five goals and provided 14 assists for Wolves last term.

It is understood detailed negotiations have taken place and an agreement on a transfer fee could be reached this week.

Douglas has been a major success at Molineux after arriving for a modest price from Turkish side Konyaspor, but Wolves would make a profit and are pressing ahead with plans to make an impact in the Premier League by signing established top-tier players.

A £16m offer for Manchester City wing-back Oleksandr Zinchenko remains on the table but is not thought to be progressing. The arrival of Castro however is set to be followed by two more additions in midfield and attack.
