Ex-Everton defender Marco Materazzi has made a surprise return to Everton with his son, 20 years after signing for the club.

The Italian posted photos of himself and his son Gianmarco outside Goodison Park on Monday.

Materazzi spent the 1998/1999 season at Everton, playing 33 games in all competitions, scoring twice and getting sent off three times as he became the first italian to play for the Toffees.

The former centre-back started his professional career at Marsala before moving to Trapani and then won promotion to Serie A with Perugia, whom he left for Goodison Park in 1998.

After leaving England, he returned to Perugia and was sold to Inter in 2001, where he made 301 appearances and scored 20 goals.

He left the San Siro in 2009 and moved to Indian Super League side Chennayin, where he would become manager until leaving in 2016.

Materazzi was a World Cup winner with Italy in 2006 where he made arguably his most memorable on-field contribution in the final.

He first conceded a penalty that Zindedine Zidane converted, before equalising with a towering header.

In extra time, he was involved in a confrontation with Zidane that saw the Frechman sent off for a headbutt.

Materazzi ended the World Cup as Italy's joint-top scorer with two goals.
