Both Brazil and Belgium arrived in Russia as favourites to win the tournament and will face each other in a massive quarter-final tie

Brazil and Belgium will clash in this World Cup's second quarter-final fixture at the Kazan Arena on Friday after beating Mexico and Japan respectively.

Both sides had been among the favourites to win the tournament before play kicked off and a tough battle is expected, though neither were able to really show their full arsenal of talent until the last 16 stage.

Belgium come off the back of a thrilling 3-2 victory against Japan that was won in the final minute of stoppage time, while Brazil registered an emphatic 2-0 win over Mexico. The pair both have momentum from the previous wins on their side and the winner will go on to face either Uruguay or France in the semi-finals.

Here is everything you need to know about Friday's quarter-final.

Match Preview

Despite all the star quality that their team boasts and four consecutive wins, Belgium's so-called 'golden generation' have not yet managed to fire on all cylinders. Equipped with the likes of De Bruyne, Hazard and Mertens, the Red Devils won all their group fixtures but their performances did not live to the high standard that they set for themselves.

Roberto Martinez's side struggled in the first half to break down a tactically organised Japan side in their last 16 fixture and were left shell-shocked when they found themselves 2-0 down after the break.

They showed strong mental strength, however, to recover from the deficit and managed to fight back to win the fixture in the last minute of stoppage time through Chadli's match-winning strike.

Brazil are also another side who were classified as favourites heading into the tournament but their first real show of quality was in their 2-0 win against Mexico.

Neymar netted in the 2-0 win over Mexico but faced heavy controversy when he was accused of play-acting an apparent injury in order to manipulate the referee.

They will be each other's biggest challenge in Russia so far and the winner will face either France or Uruguay in the semi-final.
