Jordan Henderson demonstrated a touch of class after England's dramatic penalty shootout win over Colombia as he went over to console James Rodriguez at full time.

Rodriguez and Colombia suffered heartbreak on Tuesday evening as they crashed out of the World Cup, losing 4-3 in a penalty shootout in Moscow.

The Bayern Munich midfielder was unable to feature for his country after being ruled out with a calf injury but watched on from the stands at the Spartak Stadium.

And after the match Henderson produced a show of sportsmanship by embracing Colombia's absent talisman as he sat dejected in his country's dugout.

Henderson was responsible for England's only missed penalty in the shootout as his spot-kick was saved by David Ospina to give Colombia the upper hand.

But Mateus Uribe's miss and Jordan Pickford's spectacular save from Carlos Bacca allowed Eric Dier to fire home the decisive penalty and sent England through to the last eight at Colombia's expense.

Rodriguez was earlier seen celebrating manically in the stands after Yerry Mina's towering header in the 93rd minute sent the match to extra time.

The 26-year-old was hampered by fitness issues throughout this tournament after playing a starring role four years ago in Brazil at the 2014 World Cup.

Harry Kane had fired England into a 57th-minute lead from the penalty spot in Tuesday evening's clash after he was fouled by Carlos Sanchez in the Colombia box.

England manager Gareth Southgate was spotted consoling Uribe at the final whistle, who missed Colombia's first penalty in the shootout, with his counterpart Jose Pekerman.

The Three Lions' reward for beating Colombia in the last 16 is a meeting with Sweden in the quarter-finals.  The Scandinavians defeated Switzerland 1-0 earlier on Tuesday.
