Germany OUT & Matic wore Man Utd shin pads! 7 things you have missed from World Cup Day 14

Holders Germany are the first major player in Russia to drop out of the tournament after they were stunned by two late South Korea goals as Sweden came back to bite them and go through top of group F. Meanwhile, Brazil and Switzerland secured safe passage into the business end of the finals.

There are, however, things you may not have known about Day 14. Sportsmail brings you SEVEN things you may have missed from the day's action in Russia.

Sebastian Larsson goes full Nigel de Jong

The first half of Mexico's clash with Sweden was bereft of goals but jam-packed with controversy and attrition.

Few challenges embodied that fighting spirit more than Sebastian Larsson's karate-style kick on Hirving Lozano.

His acrobatic foul earned him a yellow card and was reminiscent of Nigel de Jong's foul of Xabi Alonso in the final of the 2010 World Cup.

Milking in a bit aren't we, Neymar?

Play acting and diving are one of the only things wrong with this summer's World Cup and it appears Neymar has embraced this form of what is being described as 'tactical' play.

As Brazil looked to hold onto their one-goal lead against Serbia - courtesy of Paulinho - tempers began to flare which resulted in Neymar being challenged by a Serbian defender.

To say the Brazilian was hit hard by the challenge - or hit at all at that - is a massive understatement. Adem Ljajic slides in on the right hand side of the pitch as Neymar clips the ball over him, before squealing as he flings himself up in the air and onto the floor before proceeding to roll along the touchline.

It is unknown how many times the forward rolls, but it is clear that he completes more than five full turns before decides he's made enough of the challenge.

Jerome Boateng steals the show in the stands

Jerome Boateng had to settle for a place in the stands on Wednesday after his red card against Sweden.

Like many of his team-mates, the defender struggled for form on the pitch in Russia. But his off-field attire on Wednesday was nothing short of outstanding.

In reports on supposed cliques within the Germany squad, Boateng was named among the so-called 'Bling-bling gang' alongside the likes of Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira.

But far more eye-catching than his earrings and necklace were his round sunglasses, fit with blue lenses and complemented by a black snapback. Lovely.

Costa Rica make it a full set in Russia

Wednesday's final game against group leaders Switzerland was a dead rubber for Costa Rica, so it would have been no surprise to see them roll over and show their bellies as they prepare to make the trip back to Central America. You would be wrong to assume so, however.

Group winners in Brazil four years ago, Costa Rica are no pushovers and they showed that as Kendall Waston equalised against the Swiss to see his country become the final side to score at the tournament.

His strike in the 56th minute means all 32 teams in Russia have scored at this year's tournament, the first time it has happened since in 2010. Honduras and Algeria were both scoreless in South Africa while Trinidad and Tobago were the only side not to find the net in Germany four years before.

Matic sports United shin pads

Nemanja Matic's attentions were undoubtedly fixed on Serbia's World Cup ambitions on Wednesday night as he looked to stun five-time winners Brazil at the Otkrytiye Arena.

However, The Manchester United midfielder refused to brush his club allegiances aside either as it was revealed he would wear a pair of special edition Red Devils shin pads in the game - they did have a Serbian badge on them too, though.

While Serbia are no United in terms of their quality, Matic would have hoped his lucky United shin pads would summon a special performance for his team as they looked to secure a place in the knock-out stages.

Another day, another dol-VAR

Sorry. Anyway, Sweden and particularly their manager Janne Andersson were left absolutely livid after they were not awarded a penalty for an alleged handball by Javier Hernandez.

During the first half the ball struck the arm of the Mexico forward inside his own area. But despite consulting the VAR, the man in the middle decided it did not warrant a penalty.

In the BBC studios at half-time, Didier Drogba and Alan Shearer could not agree whether he was right on wrong.

But the referee did come in for some flak online. One fan wrote on Twitter: 'The VAR official told the referee to look at a potential handball incident, the referee has looked at this and decided that it isn't a penalty....HOW?!

Stojkovic's bizarre head ware

Serbia's man between the sticks appeared to be sporting some rather odd head ware during their clash with Brazil.

Vladimir Stojkovic had a black and yellow striped headband on as he manned the Serbian goal in Moscow, but the reasoning behind its design is unknown.

Replicating the colours of what could looks to be police tape, the headband is actually produced by Nike and is obviously being employed to divert sweat away from the eyes of the goalkeeper on a very humid night in the Russian capital, however, it is hard to remember any other player wearing the design at the tournament thus far.
