Poland and Colombia head into their second fixture of Group H knowing that a loss could eliminate them from the tournament

Poland and Colombia will face each other in Group H at the Kazan Arena on Sunday June 24 after they both lost their opening World Cup matches.

Japan and Senegal were surprise winners in their group and were outside favourites to make it to the last 16 in favour of Poland and Colombia. Colombia lamented the loss of star player James Rodriguez after he was forced out of the starting XI with an injury, while Poland's Robert Lewandowski was largely ineffective against a rampant Senegal side.

The South American side were unlucky to be down to 10 men and then conceding a penalty to Japan, while Poland also gifted Senegal two goals – one through an own goal and the other through a poor defensive error.

Either team need to play for a victory if they want to continue their realistic chances of making it to the last 16.

Here is everything you need to know ahead of the fixture.

Match Preview

The Group H match between Poland and Colombia is an evenly-matched one, featuring two teams that would have been expected to be group winners before the tournament.

In keeping with recent World Cup fixtures, however, Japan and Senegal managed to pull off surprise upsets. Defeat for either Poland and Colombia would effectively end their campaign and eliminate them at the group stage, depending upon the result between Japan and Senegal earlier in the day, and both sides will no doubt be looking to avoid a loss.

Poland’s 2-1 loss to Senegal leaves them languishing third in Group H and must win their remaining fixtures if they hope to advance to the next ground. They were unfortunate to lose to Senegal after Thiago Cionek scored an own goal and M’Baye Niang slotted home after a bad defensive error.

Bayern Munich star Lewandowski failed to make an impact for his side, and though Poland scored late on through Grzegorz Krychowiak, they were unable to salvage a point and will be looking to register a win against Colombia.

Colombia, however, will be boosted if they get positive fitness news regarding star player James Rodriguez. The forward – also at Bayern Munich – was the standout player in Brazil four years ago and won the tournament’s Golden Boot.

The South American side are in the same position as Poland in that they must be able to bounce back following a disappointing defeat, and a loss will effectively end their chances of making it to the last 16.

They will also be looking to call upon the services of Radamel Falcao, who missed Colombia’s previous World Cup campaign, and is experiencing a rejuvenated career at Monaco following disappointing loan spells at Chelsea and Manchester United.

He will be able to be called upon in the instance that Rodriguez is still injured, but also was unable to stake his claim against Japan in matchday one.
