After defying the odds to win Euro 2016, the Selecao will again look to Cristiano Ronaldo to lead them to glory in what could be his last tournament
The European champions head to the World Cup looking to follow in the footsteps of neighbours Spain by winning two consecutive major tournaments.
Portugal won Euro 2016 despite claiming victory inside 90 minutes just once in their seven matches and a better showing may be required if they are to lift their maiden Jules Rimet.
Impressively, although perhaps more on the side of Switzerland, Portugal won nine of their 10 qualification matches and still only topped Group B on goal difference.
Both the Selecao and the Swiss had won eight and lost one of their matches going into their showdown on the last day of qualifying, and a 2-0 win for the former meant they avoided the play-offs.
As expected, Cristiano Ronaldo netted a huge 15 times during qualifying as Portugal scored 32 goals in total, whilst Andre Silva's nine strikes made him fifth-top scorer in UEFA qualifying.
After reaching just two of the first 15 World Cups they entered - including a third-place finish in 1966 - Portugal have gone some way to making amends by taking part in each of the last five.
However, aside from a very creditable fourth-place in 2006, they have suffered the ignominy of a group stage exit twice and and only managed to reach the Last 16 once.
With this potentially being Ronaldo's last World Cup, the Real Madrid superstar will be out to win the one trophy that has eluded him and add to his paltry total of three finals goals.
