Vladimir Petkovic's men have not got past the last 16 of this competition in over 60 years and look to be in for the same fate again in Russia

Switzerland have made a habit of being at the World Cup but not managing to make much of a name for themselves - a run which could well continue in Russia.

The Europeans face Brazil, Serbia and Costa Rica in Group E, and should they make it through to the Round of 16, a fixture against Germany is likely to end their dream.

Astonishingly, Switzerland won nine of their ten qualifying matches but a 2-0 defeat in Portugal - who also won nine - on the final matchday meant they had to go through the play-offs.

Northern Ireland, who conceded just six goals in qualifying, awaited. The Swiss won the first leg 1-0 after Ricardo Rodriguez dispatched a controversial penalty and then held out for a 0-0 stalemate in the return to book their place in Russia.

Switzerland have featured in each of the previous three World Cups, getting into the last 16 twice and losing in the group stage once.

Their best results came back in the early iterations of the competition when they were quarter finalists three times in four tournaments between 1934 and 1954 - also the year they hosted it.

Stoke winger Xherdan Shaqiri scored a hat trick against Honduras in 2014 and three more goals here will see him equal Josef Hugl's 64-year record for most World Cup goals by a Swiss player.
