Liverpool have marked the 33rd anniversary of the Heysel Stadium disaster with the laying of flowers and the lowering flags to fly at half-mast across Anfield on Tuesday.
On May 29, 1985, a confrontation between Liverpool and Juventus fans ahead of the European Cup final in Belgium tragically led to the deaths of 39 people and injured hundreds more.
To respect those who lost their lives, a floral arrangement was placed underneath the Heysel memorial plaque on the Kenny Dalglish Stand at Anfield by chief executive, Peter Moore.
'We will always remember those who lost their lives on this day at Heysel and use this moment to pay our respects,' said Moore.
'Heysel is a tragedy that will never be forgotten, and today Liverpool Football Club honours all of those impacted.'
A ceremony was also held in Turin, Italy, at the Piazzetta Vittime dello Stadio Heysel, which is the square named in honour of the 39 victims, the majority of whom were Juventus fans.
A statement on the official Juventus website read: 'It's been 33 years since that fateful event, and even to this day it's impossible to comprehend how fans could go and watch their favourite team play and not return home.
'Today, we remember the 39 victims who lost their lives that night, and ensure that the 39 angels of Heysel are still always with us in our thoughts and our prayers.'
Heysel Stadium was redeveloped in 1995 and renamed the King Baudouin Stadium, but Section Z, where the tragic incident unfolded, was never rebuilt as a mark of respect to those who lost their lives.
