Uli Hoeness set to return as Bayern Munich president

Uli Hoeness is expected to formally complete his return as Bayern Munich president on Friday night the club's AGM - nine months after being released from prison for tax evasion.

Hoeness, 64, is set to succeed current president Karl Hopfner, who has elected not to run, to reclaim the role he left in March 2014. He is expected to run unopposed.

Hoeness was forced to resign having been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison for purposely evading paying taxes on assets deposited in a Swiss bank account.

Those assets totalled €28.5million.

He was released on February 29 this year, having served just half of his sentence.

The former German international has been a key part of the Bayern hierarchy since being forced to retire from playing at the age of 27, in 1979.

Hoeness was appointed as the club's general and commercial manager the following year and has been largely credited with leading Bayern's charge to becoming Germany's most economically savvy club during his 29 year period in charge of the club's finances, before becoming president in 2009.

Now Hoeness is set to return with the club richer than ever before.

The German champions are also set to announce record turnover of €626.8million for the financial year 2015-16 - an increase of 20 per cent - according to Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

Under the stewardship of CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, the club will announce record breaking profit, amounting to €54million before tax, up from 31.4million the previous year.

That's despite the club splashing big money on Renato Sanches and Mats Hummels during the summer.

Bayern CFO Jan-Christian Dreesen declared "We are in outstanding shape economically and remain able to compete at the highest level in the Champions League.

"Our entrepreneurial goal is to maximize our sporting success with economic soundness. Our increasing financial strength is primarily aimed at making the necessary investments in the players' squad so as to continue to be competitive among the best clubs in Europe."

The club's former sporting director, Matthias Sammer, has welcomed Hoeness' return: "It's awesome for FC Bayern and all its fans that Uli is coming back. He's no saint, not without his faults, but he's paid for his mistakes."

However, Hoeness' likely re-election has not been met with universal approval.

Andre Hahn, a member of the German parliament and the Bundestag's sport committee, has been highly critical of Bayern's decision to allow Hoeness to return.

"As president, Hoeness will represent thousands of members and I do not think Mr. Hoeness is the right man for such an important function, not after what he has done," said Hahn, speaking to Deutcsche Welle.

"I would have hoped for a different decision from FC Bayern."
