Malaysia in the AFF Cup: 10 fun facts

Goal presents to you several interesting facts regarding the AFF Cup and Malaysia's participation in the tournament.

1) From 11 editions of the AFF Cup, Malaysia have only been drawn in Group A twice; in 2007 and 2010. They have been drawn in Group B in nine editions.

2) Malaysia's 3-2 win over Cambodia in the first group match is the first time they have won their first group match since the 2008 edition.

3) Malaysia have failed to progress beyond the group stage in two editions; 1998 and 2008.

4) Malaysia have been finalists in two editions; 1996 and 2010.

5) Amri Yahyah equalled the record for most appearances for Malaysia in the AFF Cup with Shukor Adan (21), in their 1-0 defeat to Vietnam.

6) Amri Yahyah is the oldest player for Malaysia in the tournament, aged 35 years and 10 months.

7) But Amri is not the oldest player in this edition, as that distinction goes to Singapore's Daniel Bennett, who is 38 years and 10 months.

8) The 2007 edition is the only AFF Cup not held on an even-numbered year.

9) This is the first time that Myanmar and Philippines are hosting the tournament.

10) There have been only four champions in the AFF Cup history; Singapore (4 times), Thailand (4 times) and Vietnam and Malaysia (1 each).
