Vancouver Whitecaps v Portland Timbers: We need to have hunger and togetherness, says Neville

Phil Neville believes his Portland Timbers side must have "hunger" and "togetherness" if they are to get a result against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday.

The Timbers have struggled at the start of the 2026 MLS season, failing to win their last four games (D1 L3) after their opening victory against the Columbus Crew.

Portland are 14th in the Western Conference, scoring just seven goals and conceding 12 in their first five games of the campaign.

However, with a fully fit squad available to him, Neville is confident the Timbers can turn their form around.

"Having everybody available is a big sign of a really good mentality that we have," said Neville.

"We've got all our best players out there, all our best players hungry, all our best players wanting to play.

"It’s a game where we have to compete. We need to have quality. We need to have mentality. We need to have a hunger. We need to have a desire. We need to have a spirit. We need to have togetherness.

The Whitecaps are second in the West, with a 1-0 defeat to the San Jose Earthquakes bringing an end to their unbeaten start to the season (W4 L1).

Vancouver head coach Jesper Sorensen welcomed the two-week break after a busy start to the 2026 campaign, which saw them get knocked out of the Champions Cup by the Seattle Sounders.

"We have had some very good training sessions. The group has done really well," said Sorensen.

"It has been a bit of a mix. We needed to recover and have some days off. We needed that after a pretty congested start to the season.

"The players have been doing well in training and we are building something. Some players arrived late so we needed to build their fitness, others needed a rest, but it has been a little bit of a mix."

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Vancouver Whitecaps – Brian White

Brian White scored twice in Vancouver’s win over Portland on March 7, taking his total to eight goals against the Timbers since joining Vancouver in 2021.

The only player with more goals against a single opponent in that time is Hany Mukhtar against the Chicago Fire (nine).

Portland Timbers – Kristoffer Verde

After not scoring in any of his first 11 MLS appearances, Kristoffer Velde has found the net in two straight games.

No Timbers player scored in three straight games during the 2025 season, as the last player to do so for the club was Jonathan Rodriguez in September 2024.

MATCH PREDICTION – VANCOUVER WHITECAPS WIN

Vancouver are unbeaten in five straight against Portland (W3 D2), including a 4-1 road victory on March 7, the Whitecaps’ longest unbeaten run over Portland in the MLS era.

The Whitecaps are unbeaten in four straight at home against the Timbers, but the last two have ended in 1-1 draws.

Vancouver's +12 goal difference through five games is the best at this stage in league history.

Only three teams have scored more than the 14 goals Vancouver have scored through five games of a season: Los Angeles FC in 2019 and 2020 and Toronto FC in 2019 (15 each).

Portland have won just one of their last 16 away matches in all competitions (D4 L11), including losing five in a row on the road dating back to last season.

Portland’s only road win over an MLS team since the beginning of May 2025 was a 1-0 victory at Los Angeles FC last July.
