Cruz Azul has enjoyed its share of success over the years, but the club has also endured some painful and humiliating defeats in official competitions.

Among Los Celestes’ most infamous defeats is the 7-0 thrashing at the hands of Club América three years ago - a result that still stings for fans.

And same scoreline resurfaced on Thursday, in a crushing loss to the Seattle Sounders in the 2025 Leagues Cup.

Cruz Azul headed into the tournament as CONCACAF champions - but were humiliated in their league-phase opener at Lumen Field, conceding all seven goals in a catastrophic second half.

A look back at Cruz Azul’s history of thrashings

While La Máquina has suffered several lopsided defeats in Liga MX play, most of them have been less dramatic, typically capped at four or five goals. That’s what makes those two 7-0 blowouts so shocking - they weren’t just losses, they were full-blown disasters.

Looking back, the list of heavy defeats includes a 4-0 loss to Pumas in the Apertura 2020 tournament, a repeat of that scoreline by Atlas in the Verano 1999, and a 4-1 drubbing by Necaxa in the Verano 1997. Toluca put four past them in the Invierno 1996, and in 2002, Tampico Madero handed Cruz Azul a 5-0 beating. Even América had previously routed them 5-0 back in 1982.

The hits kept coming: Toluca struck again with a 5-1 win in the Verano 2000, followed by a 5-1 loss to La Piedad in the Clausura 2002. Monarcas matched that scoreline in the Clausura 2014, and in the 2003 Copa Libertadores, Uruguay’s Fénix handed Cruz Azul a humiliating 6-1 defeat.

And of course, there’s that unforgettable 7-0 loss to América in the Apertura 2022.

What is Cruz Azul’s biggest win?

Despite these low points, it’s worth noting that Cruz Azul has also dished out its own share of punishment. In the 1990s, the club recorded its most lopsided win ever - an 11-0 demolition of the Sounders, a scoreline that remains the most dominant in team history.
