From ‘Chicharito’ to Márquez: the Mexicans who have won the Club World Cup

This weekend marks the kickoff of a new and revamped version of the Club World Cup, featuring Mexican representatives in the shape of Pachuca and Monterrey.

Both teams have a slim chance of winning the trophy, but are eager to showcase a competitive edge in the tournament. Historically, Pachuca and Monterrey have proved two of Mexico’s best performers in the Club World Cup, but ironically, the only Mexican players who have ever won this trophy did so with clubs outside of the Liga MX.

Which Mexicans have won the Club World Cup?

Rafael Márquez - 2009

The ‘Kaiser’ played a significant role during a great era for Barcelona, especially in the Blaugrana’s 3-1 semi-final win over Mexican club Atlante. Although Márquez did not play in the final, the team triumphed over Argentinians Estudiantes de La Plata to claim the title.

Jonathan Dos Santos - 2011

Currently a midfielder for Club América, Jonathan Dos Santos also had the privilege of becoming a world champion with Barcelona, two years after Márquez. In 2011, the Catalans defeated Qataris Al-Sadd and Brazil’s Santos, although Dos Santos did not play a single minute in either match.

Javier Hernández - 2014

In his only trophy triumph with Real Madrid, ‘Chicharito’ shared the same fate as Dos Santos and did not participate in the two matches that Los Blancos played at the 2014 tournament. Madrid thrashed Liga MX club Cruz Azul in the last four, before beating Argentina’s San Lorenzo to secure the championship.

When does the 2025 Club World Cup start?

Held in the United States, the 2025 Club World Cup begins on Saturday, June 14, when Egyptians Al Ahly face the Americans Inter Miami in the opening game (8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT).

Monterrey have been drawn in Group E alongside Argentina’s River Plate, Italy’s Inter Milan and Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds. Pachuca, meanwhile, are in Group H with Austrians Red Bull Salzburg, Saudis Al-Hilal and Spaniards Real Madrid.

The Club World Cup is due to run until Sunday, July 13, when the final takes place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
