Ecuador qualify for World Cup after third consecutive goalless draw, Peru eliminated

Peru were in must-win territory, and started with the requisite purpose as they came close to breaking the deadlock inside three minutes, but Andy Polo’s strike from inside the box deflected wide off Gonzalo Valle’s left post. Ecuador responded in kind via Moises Caicedo’s thunderous shot from outside the box, but the Chelsea midfielder’s effort also drifted narrowly off target.
It was a first half lacking in attacking quality, with Ecuador - who held Brazil to a goalless draw last week - shading things in terms of chances without posing much threat.
The onus was on Peru to open the game up after the restart, and an encouraging start to the second half inspired belief in the stands. However, their more expansive play left them open at the back, and La Tri looked to have taken advantage when Nilson Angulo found the back of the net, but his goal was ruled out due to offside.
Undeterred, Ecuador kept pushing against their beleaguered hosts, creating two further chances to break the deadlock via Angulo and Kevin Rodriguez, but Pedro Gallese stood tall to keep Peru in the contest.
Oscar Ibanez’s men needed a spark, but rather unsurprisingly for a side who’ve netted just six times in this qualifying cycle, they lacked creativity in the final third. Their chances were boosted when Ecuador’s Alan Franco was sent off in the 75th minute for a second bookable offence, but the hosts still failed to carve out a major chance in the closing stages.
As a result, they join Chile in missing out on next year’s World Cup having managed just two wins from their 16 qualifiers. Meanwhile, Ecuador clinched a spot in the tournament finals for the fifth time in nation’s history, a feat made all the more impressive by their three point deduction.
