Bibiani GoldStars made history by winning the Ghana Premier League for the very first time following a commanding 4-0 victory over Accra Lions on the final day of the 2024/25 season.

The emphatic win at their home ground, Dun’s Park, sealed a remarkable campaign for the Miners and secured their qualification for the 2025/26 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.

Founded in 1998 and originally competing in the Division One League, GoldStars’ rise has been meteoric.

After gaining promotion to the Ghana Premier League in 2021, the club has rapidly transformed from newcomers to title contenders in just four seasons.

In their first season after promotion, the Bibiani-based club finished 9th before climbing to 5th the following season.

However, a relatively poor campaign in the 2023/24 season saw the Miners end the season 11th – only three points clear of relegation.

A season of consistency has seen GoldStars achieve the impossible as they’ve been crowned champions in their fourth season in the top flight.

Their journey to the pinnacle of Ghana football reflects a blend of solid management, community support, and on-field excellence.

The title-winning campaign was characterised by consistency and dominance. On the decisive final day, goals from Abdul Farouk Amoaful, Kelvin Oppong, Samuel Atta Kumi, and Frank Amankwah overwhelmed a relegated Accra Lions side, ensuring a three-point cushion over nearest rivals Nations FC and Hearts of Lions.

With a superior head-to-head to Nations FC, the outcome of the outstanding game of the Abrakese-based club against Holy Stars is inconsequential to the title race hence crowning GoldStars as champions.

The victory sparked jubilant celebrations in Bibiani, with the whole community reveling in this historic achievement.

GoldStars’ triumph continues a recent trend of Western Region clubs dominating the GPL. They become the third team from the region to claim the league crown in as many seasons, following Medeama SC’s 2022/23 title and FC Samartex 1996’s success in 2023/24.

This sustained success signals a shift in Ghanaian football’s power dynamics, as traditional giants like Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko face growing competition from emerging Western clubs.

Looking ahead, GoldStars will proudly represent Ghana in the CAF Champions League preliminary round next season. Club CEO Kwesi Adu has expressed confidence in the team’s preparedness and ambition, emphasising that the Miners aim not just to participate but to compete fiercely on the continental stage.

Their entry into the CAF Champions League marks an exciting period for the club and Ghanaian football, inspiring hope for continued growth and success.

The history of GoldStars continues to be written and the next chapter will be in Africa as they hope to reach the group stage of the competition like Medeama did two seasons ago.
