Mohamed Salah was quick to congratulate Tottenham after they downed Manchester United in the Europa League final - hailing Ange Postecoglou for delivering on his word

Mohamed Salah was quick to congratulate Tottenham's Europa League success as the Liverpool icon referenced Ange Postecoglou's second season claim. The Australian was adamant he would deliver a trophy this term, as has been the case in the past.

Postecoglou has been able to continue with his trend and back up his words by winning on the European stage, downing Manchester United in the final as Brennan Johnson came up with the only goal at San Mames.

Tottenham have been poor domestically and sit 17th in the Premier League, but have been able to step up in Europe. They've seen off the likes of Frankfurt and Bodo/Glimt en route to the final and the Liverpool icon has recognised Tottenham's success and their manager's claim.

The Egyptian tweeted: "He did say he’d win in his second season. Congratulations!" - and it was reposted by Jamie Carragher. Postecoglou piled the pressure on himself earlier this season when he declared that, throughout his managerial career, he's delivered in his second season.

He said several months ago as the pressure began to mount: "Usually in my second season, I win things. That’s the whole idea. The first year is about establishing principles and creating a foundation. Hopefully, the second year is going on to win things."

He doubled down on that bold claim and added: "I’ll correct myself - I don’t usually win things, I always win things in my second year. Nothing’s changed. I’ve said it now, I don’t say things unless I believe them."

The Tottenham boss has been able to back up his words and succeed where the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte failed. They couldn't deliver the trophy the club so craved but they've now claimed silverware for the first time since the Carling Cup in 2008.

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson said on the BBC : "The players, the staff, the supporters you can see what that means to the club. They have won a trophy. They have taken away that 'Spursy' tag and nobody can point that at them any more. 17 long years without a trophy, a really poor domestic campaign, it's all turned around."

Postecoglou has presided over one of the worst league campaigns in Tottenham's history. They've been beaten more than 20 times, but the Australian has been able to cover for those setbacks by claiming glory in Europe and, in doing so, landing a spot in the Champions League.
