David Ornstein, the renowned journalist from The Athletic, conducted his usual Q&A with fans and shared the latest on Manchester United’s transfer targets Matheus Cunha and Liam Delap.
Cunha to United – has the buzz died down?
“I don’t think the rumors have died down,” Ornstein explained. “It’s just that before the end of the season, there’s unlikely to be any real progress—we’ll have to wait for Cunha’s release clause at Wolves to become active in the summer window.”
Once the release clause is triggered and personal terms are agreed upon, United are expected to complete the transfer. Importantly, their qualification for European competition next season won’t affect the deal.
If United win the Europa League, will their striker priority shift from Delap to someone else? Are there targets they may abandon due to financial constraints?
“Our understanding is that Manchester United have already secured the funds for their primary targets—Delap and Cunha—regardless of European qualification,” said Ornstein.
He added that Delap’s situation is more complex than Cunha’s: “There are many clubs interested in Delap, and he hasn’t decided his future yet.”
As for other potential targets, Ornstein mentioned uncertainty around the future of Viktor Gyökeres. Meanwhile, due to salary demands and personality concerns, a move for Victor Osimhen is considered unlikely.
Could United abandon the pursuit of a traditional No.9 and pivot to players like Cunha or Mbeumo?
“If they fail to land a proper No.9, players like Cunha, Mbeumo, Antoine Semenyo, and Southampton’s Che Adams have all been on the club’s radar,” Ornstein noted.
“It’s still very early in the process, so it’s hard to give a definitive answer at this stage.
